National Geographic Quest Small Ship Adventure Cruises Lindblad Expeditions

The ship can fit 62 guests, according to the cruise website, although I noticed that there were only about 40 passengers on my trip. Here's what the cruise was like, from nature and photography excursions to early morning wildlife sightings. Consult this month-by-month guide for help planning your Alaska travel with tips on everything from weather, wildlife, daylight and the benefits of each month. National Geographic Sea Bird accommodates 62 guests with special features including a hydrophone and Splash-Cam. Onboard experts from National Geographic make this ship and its twin sister, the Sea Lion, an extra special experience. This trip is subject to AdventureSmith Explorations Terms and Conditions.

The highlight of my trip was seeing receding glaciers. I felt lucky to see them knowing one day they might be gone.

This anniversary cruise celebrated 40 years of exploring the great state of Alaska. As another perk, thanks to the sunny weather and regular spurts of mist and rain, I also saw rainbows over the ocean on most days. I felt grateful to see these glaciers in person, knowing that even if I return to Alaska in the future, they may not be the same. Taking the Zodiac rafts allowed us to get within a few hundred yards of the Dawes Glacier, located in the Endicott Arm Fjord about 85 miles south of Juneau. From the raft, I could hear the ice crackle, and watched huge chunks calve and splinter and fall into the sea. On one outing, I opted for a guided photo walk through a small island off the Chatham Strait.

The experts shared their tales with aplomb, whether out in the zodiacs or in the lounge. Nothing ever got boring, especially with the clever and sometimes cringeworthy jokes sprinkled in for good measure. On another excursion, five humpback whales breached right in front of us and shook the boat when they fell back into the water. Even though I knew the trip would be a wildlife cruise, these animal sightings were more frequent and immersive than I'd imagined. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, national park regulation or at the captain’s discretion.

Dining on National Geographic Venture

Guests on this brand are loyal, often apologizing as if they had cheated on their spouse if they mentioned sailing with another cruise line. First on the list for a good experience is following the recommended packing list! Although sometimes chilly, the observation deck didn’t deter me from enjoying it. It seemed an unexplored, often unoccupied, space with seating, blankets, and awnings for protection from inclement weather. In my broken record voice, I emphasize the importance of traveling to an embarkation port at least one day before departure.

Reader Review: NAT GEO VENTURE in Alaska’s Inside Passage (Lindblad)

The photographer took photos of me and other travelers during our daily expeditions, but also gave us tutorials on how to take better nature photos with cameras and phones. I found the naturalist staff to be personable, and eager to answer any of my questions about the types of plants or animals I saw. Wake up this morning to catch the sunrise over the stunning cliffs of Misty Fjords National Monument, rising more than 2,000 feet above the deep blue waters of the fjord. Watch wisps of cloud drift down the winding waterway and drape over green peaks as the ship cruises through the mists that give this extraordinary landscape its name.

Cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage on National Geographic Venture

Her design innovations were informed by 50+ years of expedition expertise to ensure extraordinary discoveries. National Geographic Quest was purpose-built to explore the Americas, her design and engineering informed by our nearly 40 years of experience in these regions. See the world from a new perspective with a veteran expedition team by your side and leading the way. Venture would stop or change course to allow further exploration of a natural phenomenon or in search of certain wildlife. Leaving Seattle, we headed to the San Juan Islands, a popular spot for orcas.

Later, kayaking was canceled due to the winds, but we took out on the zodiacs to explore the area. Our competent guide and birder pointed out different types of birds and spotted an eagle high in a tree. We learned about the area’s geology before returning to the ship for lunch. The lounge functioned as a window on wildlife, with glass enclosing much of the space. From the lounge, guests could head out to the bow to get an unobstructed view of the surroundings, whether on land or sea. Being a small ship, NatGeo Venture contains few public spaces besides the dining room, a lounge, and an outdoor deck.

Take advantage of spectacular photographic opportunities, practicing tricks and tips from a certified photo instructor. The experienced captain reads the ice and bring the ship as close as possible to the glacier. Set out by expedition landing craft to navigate among these surreal floating sculptures. Navigate the stunning Wrangell Narrows, an area inaccessible to larger ships, and then cruise into the Sumner Strait, keeping watch for humpback whales surfacing and sea otters gliding through the clear water around our ship.

Skilled staff members are trained in organizing activities that inspire curiosity in young people of all ages. Programming for kids may include activities like photo workshops, journaling, scavenger hunts, Zodiac-driving lessons, hands-on nature and science programming and kid-friendly menu options. Arctic Cruise Around Svalbard By John Roberts The High Arctic is the land of the polar bears, walruses, and incredible ice floes and formations that encircle the top of the world. Heading to this remote region on an expedition cruise is one of the all-time travel... Food was great, cabins were comfortable and roomy, the crew was friendly and helpful.

As morning approached, we watched the waters for signs of this most widely distributed mammal in the world. Scanning for black and white colors on the surface, we eventually caught a glimpse of the Dall’s porpoises who like to bow ride. Unlike joining a large ship where guests usually pass through a terminal, my husband and I headed to a hotel hospitality room where we waited for a bus to transport us to the ship. I had hoped that we would use Pier 66 in Seattle, the closest to downtown. Well, we boarded just a short way from there, but directly from the pier to the ship. I was grateful to receive the cruise for free, since I couldn't have afforded the $4,800 price on my own as a recent college graduate.

Explore the coast by kayak or expedition landing craft and go ashore to trace bear trails through forests intersected by crystalline salmon streams and learn about the rain forest ecosystem from naturalist guides. Fix binoculars on the banks to spot Sitka black-tailed deer and moose, as well as black bears, wolves and bald eagles that frequent the shoreline in search of plentiful salmon. Navigate the stunning Wrangell Narrows, an area inaccessible to larger ships, and then cruise into the Sumner Strait, keeping watch for humpback whales surfacing and sea otters gliding through the clear water around the ship.

This afternoon cruise Eastern Passage and Blake Channel, narrow waterways on the backside of Wrangell island where other ships rarely venture. One of two new ships expressly built for polar waters, National Geographic Resolution is named to honor the second voyage of the legendary Captain James Cook. A fully-stabilized vessel with ice class PC5, Category A, she will enable adventurous guests to go where few have or can.

We really enjoyed the naturalists and  programs, though didn’t attend all that was offered as it would have been more than we wanted. Some days were a little slow for the kids, but they managed as there were a few other children on board. The seas became rougher, and the captain moved the ship to a more protected area. We later set out again in the zodiacs and hiked around another part of Sucia with our octopus expert guide, explaining the local nature along the way. Each day, we disembarked the ship and boarded smaller boats called Zodiacs, which were inflatable vessels about the size of life rafts and used for expeditions.

Lindblad Expeditions has been exploring the region’s wildest corners for more than 40 years, seeking out inlets and coves where larger cruise ships can’t sail and taking travelers deeper into pure wilderness. In these seldom-seen areas, you may witness the thunder of a calving glacier, kayak past foraging bears, or Zodiac alongside a pod of orcas. Become immersed in First Nations culture in Haida Gwaii, and explore epic wildernesses like Glacier Bay National Park, guided by passionate experts with wide-ranging knowledge of America’s final frontier. Throughout the trip, the naturalists and photographers told me that even they were shocked by the amount of wildlife we saw. Although they do the same expedition route for weeks or months at a time, they were just as excited as the passengers by the many animal sightings, so I knew our cruise was a special experience.
